Brazos Valley Center for Independent Living is excited to announce our debut on KAMU TV‘s program, “Brazos Valley Magazine”. Dr. Sharon Colson is the host of the locally aired program and she invited BVCIL to attend as some of her guests. Jackie Pacha, Executive Director, and Shelby Catron, Office Assistant, arrived on set August 21st where they were given the opportunity to talk about BVCIL and our recent Americans with Disabilities Act anniversary celebration. Part of the show consists of footage produced by some of KAMU TV’s student production assistants and our wonderful accessible bus is the star! Please support your BVCIL by watching us on Brazos Valley Magazine next week!

Time for the 2013 Mayors’ Award Nominations

July 10, 2013

Do you know someone in our community who has done a fantastic job making life equal for people who have disabilities?

Junction 505 and The Bryan/College Station Mayor’s Committee on People with Disabilities is seeking nominations for this year’s annual Mayors’ Award. From the announcement: “This award is to acknowledge and recognize outstanding contributions by individuals in our community to eliminate attitudinal, physical, and social barriers for people with disabilities.”

Anyone in the community can nominate, and self-nominations are encouraged. Nominations are due by September 3, 2013. To access the nomination form and submission instructions, please click BCSMC Award Application 2013_2pg

The award will be presented at Junction 505’s annual Harvest Moon Fundraiser on Thursday, October 17, 2013.

New Advocacy Video Addresses Restraint and Seclusion of Students with Disabilities in Public Schools

“Gathering Grounds” School-based Employment Skills Program Helps Youth with Disabilites Achieve Job Readiness

February 8, 2013

Students with special abilities at Brenham High School in Washington County, Texas gain employment skills while helping to keep the faculty on their toes. “Gathering Grounds” is a school-based job readiness training program partnered with Independence Coffee Company in Brenham. Students in this program make and deliver coffee to teachers and staff within the high school. Through their choice to participate in this program, students learn transferable work skills such as promptness, planning, sequencing, following procedures, and interpersonal communication.

This program was part of the Brazos Valley Employment Project, and had developmental support from BVCIL Director Jackie Pacha. Please watch the following YouTube video for more information about the “Gathering Grounds” program.
